Abstract Proposal
We are living in a posthuman era—one that continues to evolve in profound ways. But what does this mean today? On the one hand, the posthuman era is marked by complex techno-biological entanglements, such as body cameras, prosthetics, and mind-uploading experiments. On the other hand, it is a time in which the interdependencies between humans and ecologies have never been more visible, as we witness the devastating consequences of climate change, plastic pollution, chemical waste, and pandemics. Furthermore, this era is characterized by the rise of authoritarianism and right-wing politics, coupled with colonial violence, war, and global conflicts. Amid this troubling landscape, researchers increasingly question the relevance and power of citizenship—both as a practice and as an analytical tool—while many individuals worldwide continue to struggle for recognition, basic rights, and legal protections. At the same time, the very same forces that disenfranchise marginalized human communities also render nonhumans and ecologies invisible and unprotected. These shifting conditions demand a critical reassessment of citizenship in the posthuman era.
This special issue aims to bring together theoretical, empirical, and methodological work that critically engages with the evolving landscape of citizenship at the intersection of posthumanism and political life. Focusing on urgent challenges such as climate change, artificial intelligence, and biotechnological advancements, among others, this issue will explore how contemporary transformations are reshaping citizenship beyond anthropocentric and exclusionary frameworks. We seek papers that examine the political-ecological and socio-technical systems shaping the lives of both humans and nonhumans, while addressing concerns of (inter)planetary sustainability, multispecies justice, and the long-term well-being of posthuman communities. Contributions will reflect the multifaceted dimensions of the contemporary posthuman era, offering insights that move beyond traditional notions of political subjectivity. Authors are encouraged to bring diverse perspectives that highlight experiences, systems, and technologies that shape more-than-human communities. We welcome submissions from researchers, philosophers, and artists across all professional fields and career levels.
